NEW YORK. Golden State basketball players advanced to the NBA Western Conference Finals, beating Memphis 110-96 at home on Saturday night and winning the series 4-2.
The winners’ best scorer was Klay Thompson with 30 points, when he converted eight three-pointers. Stephen Curry added 29 points.
The Warriors avenged last season’s elimination of the Grizzlies, but then the teams already met in the play-in for the 8th seed. Golden State is back in the conference finals after three years.
The game was mostly decided by rebounding, with the Warriors beating their opponents 70:44 to become the first team since 1983 to score at least 70 rebounds in the playoffs. At that point, San Antonio managed to reach 75.
“Unbelievable what we have achieved. Especially when we consider what this team has been through the last two seasons. Some of us in the team have also experienced the final of the competition, we know the emotions and the adrenaline. But you can never take success We’re now four wins away from competing for a championship. It’s a special opportunity,” recalled Stephen Curry, who appeared in the 2015-19 NBA Finals and won three titles.
However, he missed two and a half years due to injuries alongside Klay Thompson, who is slowly getting back into top form, which was also felt by the second-best side after the regular season.
Memphis played much better than expected in the season. He could even handle the fifth game of the series without his leader Ja Morant, who injured his knee, but in the end he will not see the final of the conference.
“This has been an exceptional season, we have created a unique team. Despite the loss, we must not forget what we have achieved and appreciate,” said Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins, according to AFP.
The defending champion from Milwaukee didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to decide the advance to the Eastern Conference finals at home when it wasn’t enough for Boston 95-108. In the Celtics jersey, Jayson Tatum shone with 46 points, the Bucks missed 44 points and 20 rebounds from Jannis Antetokounmpo.
Boston led in the final quarter with 13 points, but the home side narrowed the gap to four points. Then Tatum took over and scored 11 runs in a row. Thus, the Celtics were able to “survive” the extraordinary performance of the Greek winger, who scored 20 rebounds and scored 40 points for the first time since 2001. Shaquille O’Neal then did.
“We were before the end of the season. We all knew it. We had to give everything,” Tatum emphasized. The decisive seventh game of the series is scheduled for Sunday.
