TOKYO. In the opening match of the men’s football tournament at the 2020 Olympics, the favorite Spanish representatives drew 0:0 with Egypt in Sapporo.
The team of coach Luis de la Fuente had the upper hand in the match of Group C, they had the ball more often, but created few chances.
In the first half, only Daniel Ceballos’ technical shot into the goal post attracted attention and at the very end of the game substitute Rafael Mir headed into goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy’s arms from the penalty spot, and Jesus Vallejo only hit the side net.

The French also failed to do that, because they gave in to Mexico’s choice in 1:4, although it was still 0:0 after the break. Striker Andre-Pierre Gignac only managed to beat the experienced goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa from a penalty kick.
Former Newcastle or Marseille midfielder Florian Thauvin, Hertha midfielder Lucas Tousart or AC Milan stopper Pierre Kalulu were not missing in the French jersey.
In Group B, New Zealand narrowly beat the Republic of Korea 1:0 in Kashima. Burnley striker Chris Wood provided the only accurate shot in the 72nd minute.
In the second game of the home team “A”, Japan defeated the Republic of South Africa 1:0. Real Madrid regular Takefusa Kubo scored the only goal in the 71st minute.
