BRATISLAVA. When the tradition of the Olympics was restored in 1896, 9 sports were played. Up to 33 sports will be played at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and a total of 339 medal sets will be awarded.
It is an increase from the previous matches in Rio de Janeiro 2016. The novelty is five new sports – surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing, softball and karate.
It is on the program for the Olympic Games for the first time. The competition will be held on Šidašita Beach, which is located 60 kilometers from Tokyo. The exact date of the competition has not been determined and will depend on the circumstances as the competition takes place on natural waves. The competition itself will last two days and will consist of heats between four surfers. Two of them always advance to the next round.
The tricks of the contestants are marked by umpires.
Surfing legend Kelly Slater was close to the start in Tokyo. He is an eleven-time world champion and surfs even though he is 49 years old.
Slater did not immediately win a place in Olympic qualifiers.
However, the independent committee retrospectively evaluated surfers who were injured or unable to travel due to restrictions related to the global covid pandemic, and moved Slater to the position of deputy. Ultimately, he will not start at the Olympics.
Slovakia had no participants in the qualifier.
In an effort to appeal to young athletes and fans, skateboarding was included in the Olympic Games program. He will compete in two disciplines – park and street.
In the street discipline, athletes perform tricks on various obstacles such as stairs, railings and the like. For each trick performed, they receive points according to difficulty.
In the park discipline, they perform tricks on a sports field that resembles a swimming pool and use steep walls for tricks.

Richard Tury was successful in qualifying for a long time. The twenty-eight-year-old skateboarder was one of the best in the world, fighting for podium finishes in World Series races.
For a long time he remained in the promotion sport in the Olympic ranking in the street discipline. He only lost his place at the end of qualifying. He finished just below the line.
Climbing is gaining in popularity, it has its own world championships and for the first time there is a fight for Olympic gold on the climbing wall.
The competition itself will consist of three disciplines – speed climbing, bouldering and lead climbing. The winner is the one who gets the highest score in the sum of the three disciplines. The entire competition takes place in one day.
Climbing quickly on a 15 meter wall is interesting. It has precisely placed grips on every match and the best can cover this distance in 5 to 7 seconds.
Bouldering is climbing without a rope at a low altitude. The number of zones and points obtained are evaluated. In the third discipline – climbing by difficulty – the participant is secured with a rope and the height reached is judged.
Slovakia had promising representatives in qualifying – Petr Kuric and Vanda Michalkova. However, none of them managed to achieve an Olympic place.
One of the big favorites of the competition is Czech climber Adam Ondra.
Which martial art is most associated with Japan and its culture? Karate has its Olympic premiere in Tokyo.
It is divided into two disciplines: kata practice and kumite. During the kata, fighters perform solo exercises, it is basically a demonstration of a series of punches and kicks. Kumite is a mutual fight. In Tokyo, Kumite will be competed in three weight classes.
Several Slovak karateka participated in the qualification for an Olympic place. No one managed to win it.
The Olympics include softball from 1996 to 2008, baseball from 1992 to 2008. Softball and baseball were not contested at the London and Rio Games.
Now they return to the OH program. Women’s teams will compete in softball. In men’s baseball. Both games have the same principle, but softball is played on a smaller field and with a larger ball.
Slovaks will not participate in this team sport at the Olympics.
In addition to new sports, the program of the games will also include a number of new disciplines in traditional sports. Mixed relay or mixed team competitions were added in various (athletics, swimming, triathlon, archery, shooting).
A novelty at the Olympics, however, is street basketball in the 3-on-3 format, which is played in front of one basket. The first team to reach 21 points or lead after 10 minutes of play wins.

A total of 12 teams in the men’s and women’s competitions will participate in the tournament in Tokyo.
Interestingly, while in classic basketball the US team is the big favorite with both men and women, in 3×3 basketball the US teams didn’t even qualify for the Olympics.
